$5M Settlement in Gunshot Case Using Animation

What should have just been a normal bus ride for William Sykes’ client turned into a nightmare as he was targeted by a disgruntled bus driver. After arguing on the bus, the bus driver and passenger disembarked, and the bus driver shot him in the arm. The internal damage caused by the bullet resulted in compartment syndrome, a potentially life-threatening condition in which increased pressure in the muscle compartment can lead to muscle and nerve damage, as well as problems with blood flow. If left untreated, it can result in muscle death, amputation, and even loss of life. Mr. Sykes needed an animation that would not only show the damage caused by the bullet itself, but also the resulting compartment syndrome to communicate the pain and suffering his client experienced due to this injury.

“This was one of the first animations done for us by Focus Graphics, and they did not disappoint. We had an injury that didn’t sound so traumatic – an in-and-out bullet wound, but we had to show that this was not a ‘clean’ shot. The resulting compartment syndrome was very painful for my client and resulted in many complications…we needed to show all of this in a way that a jury could understand. Focus Graphics came through with an animation that showed, in detail, the path taken by the bullet and how it caused the resultant compartment syndrome. While it never made it to a jury, I believe that this animation was key in settling this case for our client for $5 million. I have since used Focus Graphics for many more cases with similar results, and will continue to do so in the future.”
